Crochet Baby Romper Pattern (Easy Overall Onesie)
IntermediateYarn: DK Cotton (Size 3)Hook: 4.0mm (G-6)Time: 5-7 hours2 min read

This overall-style romper is worked in simple panels and seamed together, with button straps for easy on-and-off. Sized for approximately 3-6 months; adjust starting chain and row counts for other sizes.

Materials

  • Soft DK weight cotton yarn (about 150-180g)
  • 4.0mm crochet hook
  • Two buttons
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers

Abbreviations

  • ch โ€” chain
  • sc โ€” single crochet
  • hdc โ€” half double crochet
  • inc โ€” increase
  • dec โ€” decrease
  • st(s) โ€” stitch(es)

Back Panel

Chain 34.

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and across. Turn. (32 hdc)

Rows 2-16: ch 2, hdc across. Turn. โ€” building the back to about 9-10 inches.

Leg Divide (Row 17): ch 2, hdc in next 15 sts, leave remaining sts unworked (this becomes one leg opening). Turn.

Rows 18-19: ch 2, hdc across the 16 sts (working the strap portion up toward the shoulder). Turn.

Fasten off. Repeat the leg-divide-and-strap shaping on the other side of Row 17 (rejoin yarn to remaining unworked stitches) to create the second shoulder strap.

Front Panel

Work identically to the back panel through Row 16, then divide for legs the same way, but leave the straps shorter (stop after Row 18) since the front straps will button onto the back straps rather than meeting at the shoulder directly.

Assembly

Sew the side seams of the front and back panels together from the waist down to the leg openings. Leave the leg openings unseamed. At the shoulders, overlap the front straps behind the back straps and mark button placement.

Leg and Neck Trim

Work 1-2 rounds of sc around each leg opening and around the neckline for a clean, finished edge.

Buttons and Straps

Sew one button to the end of each front strap. Work a small buttonhole loop or a simple chain loop near the end of each back strap to button through.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Try the romper on (or hold up to baby) before final sewing if possible to fine-tune the strap length.

Tip: work the leg openings a bit looser than you think you need โ€” a snug leg opening makes diaper changes much more difficult.
