Granny Square Blanket Pattern (Easy Crochet Throw)
Free granny square blanket crochet pattern with a modern colorway — a classic, beginner-friendly throw that's fully customizable to any size.
The granny square is the most iconic motif in crochet, and for good reason: it's quick to memorize, endlessly customizable, and forgiving of tension differences. This throw uses 64 squares (8x8) for a lap-size blanket, roughly 50" x 50".
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in 4 colors (A, B, C, and a neutral border color D) — about 200g each
- 5.0mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Gauge
One square = approximately 6.5" x 6.5" after blocking. Gauge isn't critical here, but keep it consistent across all squares.
Granny Square Pattern
Chain 4, join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2] three more times in ring. Join with slip stitch to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off color A.
Round 2: Join color B in any ch-2 corner space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same space (corner made). Ch 1, in next ch-2 space work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Repeat from * around. Join, fasten off.
Round 3: Join color C in any corner. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same space. Ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner space. Repeat around. Join, fasten off.
Round 4 (Border): Join color D in any corner and repeat the same pattern as round 3, working 3-dc groups in every ch-1 space along the sides. Fasten off.
Make 64 squares total.
Joining Squares
Lay out your squares in an 8x8 grid, arranging colors so no two identical color placements touch. Using color D, join squares with slip stitch or single crochet through both loops, working in rows and then joining the rows together.
Border
Once joined, work 3-4 rounds of single crochet around the entire blanket in color D, adding a corner increase (3 sc in same stitch) at each corner of every round to keep it flat.
Finishing
Weave in all ends, block gently with a light steam or damp-blocking, and let dry flat. Your blanket is ready for movie nights.
Tip: keep a small notebook of which colors you used in which position — it makes matching leftover yarn to future projects much easier.
